The on camera flash is useful for, well, just about nothing. But it used to be a good external flash would cost as much as an entry level body, or a solid lens. But Canon is changing the game. Their Speedlite 470EX-AI is marked down to $199.00 at B&H Photo.

This flash is exceptionally nice - features I haven't even had time to explore. I purchased one used for more than B&H is selling them today. The tilt head gives you a great way to illuminate a dark room and get better photos at lower ISO. Pointing the flash directly at the subject will give you strong lighting for the subject. The flash comes with a diffuser to reduce the harshness of the light.
